GHOST GUMS STORY
Paper cut in glass
Beside the crumbly buildings with tin roofs, chicken wire fences, and hand-painted signs, stand ancient trees. Smooth white branches twist like sinew, their knobbly joints rising above the faded bitumen. Everywhere I live, I see Ghost Gums.
Here, trees from Blayney, Cowra and South Yarra remind me of the places I have lived and walked. These trees, both beautiful and eerie, represent not only the natural world but also echo the history, memory, and sense of impermanence that these regional and urban environments carry.
They stand as markers of the present, embodying the resilience of the land and people in the face
of time and change. And they remind us of our enduring connection to place and memory, anchoring us in the “here”, while hinting at the unseen. How deeply place, time and memory intertwine.
