CORRUGATED TOWN STORY
Paper cut in glass
Crumbly buildings with tin roofs, chicken wire fences and hand-painted signs. The small town we grew up in; got stuck in; left; returned to; retired to; desire to. Australian country towns have long been criticised for their unsympathetic design. Scarce funds stretch across expansive landscapes, leading to reoccurring potholes during wet summers, and businesses folding under the weight of drought, bushfire, and flood. The weather is always too hot; too dry; too wet; too.
Yet, in these relentless adversities, there emerges an undeniable spirit. People form communities, homes, farms and livelihoods - lived together, support each other.
Here, the artist stands as witness to our environment and our time. The work mirrors the tensions in our regional spaces - the fragile, transient nature of both structures and lives, captured in delicate forms of paper, negative space, and shadow. Fences, buildings, and power poles reappear, symbolising both the everyday and the enduring.
This is an ode to the regional town, a body of work that celebrates the unique landscape of power lines, uneven footpaths and corrugated everything. But is also acknowledges our moment, where these places emerge with resilience and quiet beauty. It’s about the here and now, where place, time and community shape who we are.
